The soul of third places was never really about the place, eh? It was all about the repetition. Showing up to the same spot...seeing the same people...re-visiting to see the incremental changes at a favorite hangout spot...All gone now. Instead of cool restaurants, we get vending machines now. Do you think it's recoverable or is this just where we are now? Really enjoyed this piece, Kima. Subscribed, can't wait to read more of your work.

Quy, love how you framed it here. I think it is recoverable because people do still crave it. can’t wait to read more of your work too. I love

the notes you write

This article helped me clarify a few things in my mind and I loved the suggestions at the end. Just because something is repetitive, something you do over and over again, does not automatically make it a ritual.

Most of the “morning routine” content feels like Fordism and the factory worker, where workers performed the same small task repeatedly, quickly, as a means to an end, detached from their surroundings and from other people.

Rituals are done in community, for their own sake, for honoring the ritual itself, and they take time (they are inefficient). Rituals strengthen ties with other people and with one’s surroundings, Fordist repetition turns individuals into efficient automatons. As you may know Charlie Chaplin has a great movie on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n9ESFJTnHs
